Design Development
Below is an overview of the design process for the different skus that we had first worked on for the collection. It all started with exploring different shapes based on our mood board and brainstorming and then determining what was best for the collection. From there we worked on sculpt compositions - seeing how the stems/twigs interact with the main vessels and also looking at mixing and matching metal finishes and textures.
Ideation
The main inspiration of the shapes came from minimalist Japanese ceramics, metalwork and other crafts. We all gravitated towards the silhouette with the cantilevered lower section that abruptly turns to a straight angled edge.
Vase Development
We started out with the usual Small, Medium, Large approach but thought it was too predictable. For an opportunity to mix and match and also celebrate the shape itself, we decided to make the medium vase different in proportion and finish. We didn’t include the sculpt for this size so it acts as the quiet transitional piece among the set of 3 vases.
Bowl Development
We wanted the bowls to be either functional or decorative depending on the user. Like the vase, we did the same “S,M,L” approach in the beginning but began to break it up in the end by combining low bowls with sculpts and high plain brass-plated bowls that can be matched with sculpted servers or utensils
Pitcher Development
We had also translated the general silhouette of the collection to the pitcher. However, we went through several iterations in figuring our the best and most ergonomic way the handles could be composed and attached to the body. Based on the final composition we had sent, the India team made sure in sampling that the handle was comfortable to hold.
