Product Development
Finalizing the ideal format for the server was not too difficult. Although we had avoided using complicated mechanisms, figuring out the final dimensions of each component turned out to be the real challenge
Studies
As it turned out, so many factors were at play in determining the optimal dimensions and configuration. For example, the first iteration that nested perfectly was too high for stacking. Physical mock-ups proved to be crucial at this point. It took several iterations before arriving at the final design and specifications.
Final Specifications
Creating the Solidworks models were also made easier by creating physical mock-ups at the earlier development stage. The challenge was visually communicating the final design to our overseas factory to avoid mistakes and reduce back and forth. I broke the specs down to each frame and platter plus an additional sheet showing how all components come together.
