Tribal Concepts
I started with shoe sketches and applied various geometric patterns on the show which were derived from the inspirational images I gathered. To get a better sense of these patterns, I rendered the shoes using markers and showed it to the team. We then decided to move forward with Tribal Patches since it captured the tribal feel more whereas the Tribal Criss-Cross felt too rigid.
Final Tribal Design
I recreated the Tribal Patches in Adobe Illustrator with minor modifications to the patterns. They were simplified to make it less busy. The design was finalized in 2 colorways. The first employs a quirky “re-energized eggplant” color palette which emphasizes the differences among the 3 graphic panels. The second is in a muted black and white version where the 4 panels of pattern visually blend together.
Rainbowtech Concepts
Rainbowtech was a more contemporary approach that can have lots of interpretations due to its ubiquity. With the help of the team, the directions were narrowed down to the Barcode and Equalizer. The Equalizer proved to be the stronger concept as it embodies both color and technology. Being synonymous to music, it was definitely more relevant especially in the digital music era.
Rainbowtech Final Design
I made use of primary colors for the equalizer with a variation in tones for a more energetic and “electric” feel. To reinforce the audio element, the team suggested eyelets in red, yellow and white. It served as a visual throwback allusion to the audio jacks which ironically, the customer would likely be unfamiliar with. The 2 colorways also show how the same set of colored elements interact differently with black and white.
